Your opinion on Noerl in that other post was one of the reasons I even started looking at them. From what I can find, Noerl is Vevor now but not positive. Started talking to my life long mechanic about the units and he basically says the same things you say. Figured I would give it a shot. He just installed the same unit on one of his personal boats a week or so ago, so that gave me a little bit more confidence in it.
I think they are different just based on the helms and hoses. I would need to get two kits side by side. I may have to do that for shits and giggles.

@Delek thank you for posting I’m going to put hydraulic steering on my boat next summer and have been looking at all the options. I use my boat less than 5 times a year and don’t go over 25

I’m thinking of adding hydraulic steering to my skiff. Thanks for starting this thread. I’m interested in hearing the good and bad.

Did you do the install yourself?

Happy to report, I’ve got about 8 hours of use since the installation. Still alive. The system is smooth as butter. No leaks, no signs of early corrosion on the unit itself. I will continue to monitor and update on this thread.

Just found this….

Well, I dont have a bone in this nor do I know if any are good or bad. I will share that on my first boat back in 1983, an I/O lake boat I picked up on the side of a pond and fixed it up. July 4th took her out. So many people on the lake we had to follow a good size cruiser out of the harbor to break the wakes. Took off and got hit by a huge wake and steering broke. Engine snapped fully to side of transom. At high speed almost capsized us. A wonder everyone stayed in. Idled back steering the I/O holding onto it. No joke at any speed other than no wake idle.

I did install the unit myself. No bad to report so far! Pretty easy install if you are handy. Helps to have a second hand though.

Update. Still working great. Lots of use. No leaks. Still buttery smooth. Tiny amount of corrosion on a part of the unit emanating from around one of the screws going in to the cylinder. Cleaned it off, Coated the unit with some T9. I will monitor. I’m sure the screws are not the highest level stainless

Without starting a whole other discussion about budget hydro steering kits, is the noerl/vevor kits still working acceptable? I have a cable i on my rat skiff i am trying to repkace with a hydro system on a budget. David

Uflex is a good bit cheaper than Seastar. And their stuff is as good if not better for the smaller outboards. I have yet to see one leaking. I have had mine for several years now. Every SeaStar I have ever had leaked a little
