I have an opportunity to purchae a slightly used Orvis Recon for the same price of a new TFO Axiom 2-X. Anyone do a compareson of these two rods, particularely 9'- #12 for Tarpon ?
I am aware of that. I also was under the impression that the current rods are a second generation that are faster than the original version. Hence the adition of a #12.the first gen recon was not made in a 12wt... it stopped at 10wt.
Are you talking about the original first generation of the Recon being soft and lacking backbone or the current generation ? From what I ubderstand the current version has been updated with Helios 3 technology. My only experience is with 9 weights of both rods was permit fishing. In the 9wt class I'd choose the Axiom II-x over the Recon. The recond was soft and didn't have any backbone to it. The TFO was fast and responsive. For me fishing it in the wind I preferred the TFO. My casting stroke favors a fast rod most of the time though. Both rods could be completely different as 12 weights though.
Thanks for the advice. From what I read on their website the Blitz is mkore or less designed to deliver heavy lines, and large flies at distance. My intended use is to fight large tarpon so although casting ability is high on my priorety, I'll be casting smaller flies but fighting big fish is crutial. Once the cast is made and presumly you hooh up, you have to be able to tire out the fish as quickly as possible. I know people are going to jump in and say you fight big fish with the reel and a low angle not the upper section of rod, yara yara. I have two RPLX #12 in both three piece and two and although they are slayers when it comes to fighting big fish, they cast like a broom stick and are not very pleasant to awing. I have'nt used them since I got the first generation Axiom ll and I'm looking for another rod to have in the boat for obvious reasons.I do not want to side track but personaly i prefere Blitz over Axiom 2x. Much better feeling. Perhaps you can puch axiom 2x harder but Blits its not a baby toy either. Feels great. Loads easier. And much better control with shorter distances ( " surprise! 30ft 1pm"... Shi...(@>%&!!!"-Axiom 2 x is bad at short distance and doeas not handle surprises very well- in my opinion. Still great stick.
