What to look for in a skiff??

2184 Views 42 Replies 26 Participants Last post by  Dog___fighter
I'm sure it has been discussed, however I am still working on my 20 post minimum and I have some specifics that I'm looking for as well.

I'm looking for skiff recommendations and things to look for when purchasing. Could be things you wish you would have known when you bought your first skiff. Could be things that you wish you had on your boat.

Specifics in what I'm looking for listed below.

1. I will be pulling my skiff with a 2020 Subaru outback that has a towing rating of 2,700 pounds

2. looking for a draft of 5 to 7 inches

3. can hold 3-4 people (the draft doesn't apply to this if I have more then two people in the boat)

4. I don't care what the length is

I am not against building a skiff but if this is your recommendation, please recommend the hull and motor as well

Thank you,

I saw that after I commented. That is a nope from me. lol.
Yeah that's a lot of work time that could be spent fishing but it would be cool to build one.

I'd rather let someone else do the work for me and fish more. Not to mention that I know myself well enough to know it would be a disaster if I tried. Ha.

its not really brain surgery. you can read through 100's of builds on boatbuildercentral. you can follow other peoples builds of chris's design online as well. you aren't reinventing the wheel, you are following a series of steps that someone else already figured out for you...if you can read and follow instructions, have some common sense, you can build a boat.

and if all else fails, just sand it out and redo it.

here in the Northeast with have this crappy thing called winter, aka boat building season. Mine took around 6 months working on it only nights after 6/7 when i was working 6 days a week with only one day off...

My two biggest pieces of advice would be how does it pole? and is it meant for backwater, is the hull designed to cross open water, etc.

and the best part is, all the knowledge and quick tips/tricks are free by simply just asking members who have built theirs.

Price Range?
Type of Fishing you do?
Dry storage?
Console Vs Tiller?
Price range varies- I will be selling another boat and that money will go towards this plus I have some good change saved up to throw in as well.

type of fishing- Mainly on the fly but just about everything

Storage- will be in dry storage

Motor type- happy either way. Center console is preferred but that isn't a deal breaker for me.
Building isn’t too bad if you have the time. It’s just fiberglass and resin. Just cut it and sand it off if you mess up.

If I were to do it again, I’d build the hull and deck while paying someone 5-10k to do the finish fairing and paint. Fairing can make any boat look good. Fairing took me way too long and someone that has done it before with the right tools could do it in a week or two versus months. Then get the finished boat back and do all the electrical stuff.

I spend just under 17k for the hull, motor, push pole, platform, and all electrical stuff. Probably spend 5k for beers while sanding and paying people to help me flip it haha

Not sure if your building at this point, but if you want to buy, what you have described is a Carolina Skiff 16' with a 30-40 hp. You can get them with a tunnel also. Won't pole that great but it meets your criteria.
Being your just getting started ,id go easy on the pocketbook ,id be looking at the 16'-6" skimmer or similar weight boat ....

Your 3-4 people is gonna be the hard part 3 is very doable, but when you include that fourth person it gets crowded quick! One thing i learned is never buy a boat with others in mind! Because long term they disappear and you wind up with more boat than you need ,buy with your everyday crew in mind!meaning Immediate family!

Far as building i dont recommend that unless you have a shop to work in and rather build than fish 😏 building is very time consuming, but its also Very Rewarding ......this is a personal choice though and only you can make that call....

A New Water Curlew will be the closest thing to what you want. I think it will meet all your criteria. It’s a little harder to pole than some of your technical poling skiffs but I did it on one for over 10 years. Super shallow draft runs in spit without tearing up the bottom!
Should have been more specific. Not looking for that type of draft when I have that many people in the boat. that type of draft is when I'm actually fishing so with myself and one other.
All Kevlar Vantage is rated for 4 and will float in 7-8” with a 90 per East Cape

just throwing our name in the hat, and trying to hit the 20post min - Tunnel Masters start 25k tiller, 28 raised rear console - painted stripped hull is under 500lbs - 3 can fish, poles straight in 5inchs or less, all aluminum construction - the original 17T hull design - building them in homosassa fl - run in sub 8 inchs with no jackplate, low water pickup or stainless prop -

Tight lines

It’s depends on who the 4 people are. I have fished two gals and two girls in Chittum 18 no prob. Not doing that with 4 big dudes.

If you fish this many it will be spinning gear not fly, too much going on.

There is so much nuance to this but many 18’ boats will do this some some concessions considered. Too much to type.

I looked into them, Only thing I am wondering about in regards to the Carolina skiff is I have read they have a rough ride.

Now on the same point idk how much that will really be a bother at this point in life. do you have any empierce with this?

Is the hardware stainless? curious how it holds up after years of saltwater.

Carolina skiff? I didnt mention Carolina skiffs ? I was referring to skimmer which has a v hull not flat like CS! A flat bottom Rides like a flat bottom, same as stump knockers, but they all have their place 👍
