Hello all. Hiked out to camp on a beach in the glades last weekend and brought a fly rod along. Waded out a bit, but with the current and all the floating grass the line in the water with all sorts of resistance made casting tough. Any light weight, easily pack able fly line management gear youd recommend?

The very few times I get out of my skiff and wade, I'll strip big coils to my line hand. Takes a little practice and coordinating releasing the coils when you shoot the line so it doesn't tangle but isn't that challenging. The spey casting crowd does a great job of line management while in the water.

I tried a William Joseph basket and I like the fact that it rolls up into the belt, out of your way, when you don't need it. Pricey, but convenient. It's handy on the jetty, or when wading around tall grass or oysters.

I have a ”Take” brand stripping basket. It looks sorta like a dishpan but curved to fit your body and with spikes in the bottom. It works great for times where everything else is hard to do. All stripping baskets are a PIA but better than not having one when nothing else works.

This one looks possible, thanks! Thanks for all the recommendations, but the others are not ideal for trekking out for miles through the glades...

Got look into the spey style. No additional gear would be ideal.

picked up one of these to bass fish banks. Bit of a learning curve for striping but once you get it, it’s pretty nice. Started leaving it on the boat too so I can fish off my platform some without the bucket.

Spend a little more and get the Orvis it is worth it. Not sure I would be wading off the beaches in the glades with the amount of sharks I saw there...just saying.

These are copies of the original LineKurv/Orvis basket and those who use them swear by them.
While I don't use one, they definitely have their place.

The TAKE baskets are annoyingly expensive, the elastic belt lasts about a year, and they are smaller and less deep than a Linekurv. Still, they are light, flexible, work well, can worn off to the side or pushed out of the way easily and I’m very happy I bought one. I use it when wading while bonefishing and am certain it has improved my success rates substantially. Obviously I would prefer not to use it, but catching fish trumps small inconveniences and the tradeoff is well worth it. I had resisted trying it for some years until I saw a photo of an Alphonse guide using one and realized I was being stupid.
I also use it on a center console when false albacore fishing if I need to fish from the stern/helm position which requires moving around obstructions in order to get a cast off.

There are situations where I prefer the more substantial Linekurv basket, for which you can also get an elastic belt, but these involve striped bass fishing in difficult conditions and for light weight applications and comfort the TAKE basket seems hard to beat.

This is an interesting read and I am tempted to try that new fangled belt line holder. I have tried most of the stripping baskets here. In the end I don't use any. I wade a lot in Maine in both estuaries and ocean front as well as beaches in SWF. And also freshwater trout streams. While I agree in some situations a basket may assist I do well enough adjusting line with tide swings. I think beach fishing may most warrant a stripping container as the line can get caught often on shells or sticks etc. I will give that a shot this early summer. I have a bunch of them deom fold ups to orvis dish pans belt types. I will get back with a report.

Before moving back home to Florida, I lived on West coast for 20 years. Used to surf fish on the fly quite a bit from Monterey to SF Bay with 6-9 wt rods, sinking lines. Would get “kelped” quite a bit so bought an Orvis basket. Worked great but in that hydraulic the basket would get “kelped” as well in addition to being a hell of a sea anchor if / when you fell. I ended up fishing more from the shore without a basket and still caught lots of surf perch (great fish btw), usually within 10-15 ft of the shore and sometimes behind me in the wave line. I know the hydraulic here in FLA isn’t the same though

Nothing like a horse shoe crab going across your foot in waist deep stained water! Had a 5' shark about 50' out not visible if fully submerged... moon walked back in a little slowly after that hahaha. Live a little.

Have you had a chance to try out the belt line holder? If so how do you like it?

I actually like it a lot. Like I said there’s a learning curve but once you got the stripping pattern down it becomes natural. I’ve found that stripping once then stripping into the holder, stripping once again then stripping it into the holder gives you nice large loops beside you and it flies out quite easy.
