I recently bought a used Native 17 with a 40 e-tech tiller and wonder about the need for a transom saver, and if so, which one is the best. It came with a Swivl-Eze and that thing is royal pain. I have to almost lay down to get it attached to the trailer and the bracket and pin setup looks kinda flimsy. I have searched this forum and the web and there are many opinions but I would appreciate the opinions of fellow skiffers. I trailer long distances.

I have looked a many different designs, The Motor Mate looks easy enough but does it really "save" the transom?

I have used the Walmart transom savers before on my old native 14 and never had a problem. Another option is to use a sea sucker attached to the bottom of the transom and then a transom saver from that to the motor. Coincidently enough it’s on a native17.

I use the one from West Marine that attaches to the crossbeam of the trailer. That way if you get rear ended like I did the force of the impact travels down the transom saver and into the trailer beam. Easier to replace the aluminum beam than a transom. I had no damage to the motor or boat.

How does that help the transom at all? This is just a power tilt / trim saver …. No ? Am I crazy
Do you realize the forces the transom has exerted on it when the outboard is pushing the skiff and everything in it across choppy water? Much more than any bouncing on the trailer down the road. I do the same, just a piece of wood and sometimes nothing at all and tow skiffs all over. It gives the trim cylinders some support unless you tow with the outboard fully tucked.

Yes, I realize it goes through a lot of stress but if I can minimize the stress while driving for 1 to 2 hours per trip, that would be great.

Same, I have a m-y wedge to support the motor trim, but it does zero for the transom, and I have a 10ft powerpole and 530lb engine hanging off a jackplate. Drove it through the hell that is Atlanta and gritted my teeth the entire time.

This one has several models and you can buy the crossmember mounting bracket that is compatible with some models.
