Looking to place an order for a Skimmer Skiff 16 in April but not sure whether to stick with the base trailer or upgrade to tosion axle.

So to all the Skimmer Skiff owners, how well does the 16’ trailer? Is it worth the extra $600 to get the upgraded trailer with torsion axle??

Thanks.

How much do you like replacing trailer springs?

What Backcountry said ^^^ This is one of the reasons I bought my boat...sits really low on the trailer. So far I haven't been on a ramp I couldn't dry launch/retrieve from. Rear roller just touches the water and I can use momentum to drive 2/3rds on, attach the strap and drive to level ground. This keeps from possibly undercutting the ramp under power and makes it much easier to winch the boat up the rest of the way on the flat. Of course, the strap should be in good condition. Axel/hubs never touches water...so far. The Cayo is light, so this works well for me...solo.

Good point.

The ride is probably my biggest concern but having the ability to dry-launch would be good too.

I think I’ll talk to Bobby at Skimmer Skiff and see if I can just upgrade to the torsion axle without getting the other things the trailer upgrade comes with like mag wheels and diamond-plate fenders. Don’t really care how the trailer looks, just want it to ride right.

I don't know how much a skimmer weighs but I had a continental trailer before and hated the fact it would bounce and beat up my boat while trailering. I upgraded my sprung trailer to a torsion and won't go back. The torsion setup I have now it killer, much easier to launch and retrieve. Link to my conversion here : LINK.
