So, I have 2 batteries mounted under the front deck w/ no other access except from the front bulkhead and it makes it a real pain to check and fill the batteries.
I am considering putting a round deck plate in over the batteries to correct the problem.

I need ideas and suggestions to avoid any pitfalls. I want a clean unobtrusive look if I can get it.

Don't do it, all deck plates leak eventually and none mount flush to the deck. And you would need a big rectangular Rabud style plastic hatch to gain usable access to the vent caps.
I know this because the previous owner of my skiff installed the Rabud hatch and a 3" and a 6" round deckplate on the 6 ' front deck. Even with this access it's a pain to check water levels in my troller batt. And these hatches leak, not a lot but annoying none the less.
You sound like a prime candidate for a pair of sealed AGMs.
