I have a 2001 Waterman with a 25HP 2 stroke Mercury outboard. I need a little more speed. My friends fly right by on their skiffs & they have 20HP engines. What outboard would you guys recommend?

Maybe try a different prop before repowering. You would be surprised what it can change.

Do you have a tach? If not slap a tiny tach on there and see what RPM you are getting at WOT.

does Se7en Marine make a tiller for their 557? Your friends wouldn't blow by you anymore...

^ what they said above. The tach will let you know if your engine is prop limited or if it's just an old motor and has lost a few ponies over the years. Assuming you've kept up with the maintenance...

I have the same boat, same year but a tunnel hull. With the 25 merc mine did 28 loaded with 2 men on a good day. And that was wide open and propped right (Vengeance prop). being a 15 year old motor (at the time I got the boat) I was as concerned with longevity and reliability as well as speed. I sold the 25 for 2500 bucks and bought a new 2 stroke Tohatsu 50 tiller for 5400.00. No regrets but it did add some weight.

34 to 35 with 2 men fishing but I am running a PT SWC3 prop with monster cupping to take advantage of my tunnel which I love but probably costs 2-3 mph. Monster hole shot.

I would go with a Tohatsu or Suzuki 30hp.

I could be wrong but I doubt you would get much if any more speed out of a 30 4 stroke would you? The old Merc 25 2 stroke was thought to have put out close to 30hp.

Concur, assuming that your old Merc is still putting out around 25 HP, going up to a 30 (regardless of whether it's a 2 or 4 stroke) isn't gunna buy you much in the way of numbers...but if the underlying issue is that the motor just isn't putting out the ponies it should, then a light 30 HP 4-stroke I think would be one way to skin the cat if you didn't want to jump all the way to a heavier 50 4-stroke

    It's not much... 1-2mph difference.

isn't this where someone jumps in to say you should send that 2 stroke to some hop up shop I can never remember the name of?

horsepower is somewhat relative. It's the torque that gits it. Some of the 4 strokes just don't git, esp for holeshot. They are getting lighter though, hope they hold up long term. I want to see how many of these 4 strokes stay running as long as their 2 stroke predecessors did.

I bought Carson racing reeds for my 90 and they really made it come alive. Easy to do yourself too. I'm not sure what they'd do for a 25 but anything helps and they are well under $100.

A 30 hp 2 stroke is the answer to your problem.

You can buy them brand new in the Bahamas.
