Ok, so please tell me that’s a shot of your local retail outlet and not your man cave!😳😳😳
Actually, it is the best bourbon bar in the state*. DTO on Galveston Island. This happened after I asked the owner if they had any “good” rum, and he asked what exactly did I mean by “good”. I said Four Square special releases, and he started dropping bottles on the bar in front of me. Then he allowed that 1/2 pours were a deal there…I tasted them all (and he had as many with me) and tried to take pics/notes of the particularly special ones. It is a happening spot most nights and this was no exception as he and I created a scene of Rum wonderment. Looking forward to getting back there and asking the same question!

*I’ve seen better selections but not better prices on pours of good bourbon

**If you go there, there is plenty of purple neon and flags flying…you’re on Galveston Island, roll with it.

Nice!! I’ve had every bourbon up there but Stagg. Can’t find it here anywhere. Don’t underestimate that bottle in the middle….. Old Grand Dad 114. Perfect proof to price and availability option. That and Wild Turkey 101 are my two everyday budget options.

I’ll keep an eye out for Pilar. Most of our offerings in the govt controlled state of NC are Captain and Barcardi and a slew of dumpster flavored excrement.
I know right…How does NC get away with that $#!+? Governor run and reports to no one except the governor. Funding, budget and spending only reportable to governor, so I’m told. Trump all other LEO’s too I’m told.

There’s been talks of privatization, but we all know Uncle Sam ain’t gonna cut the cord on that goose!! Some ways it is beneficial though(I can’t believe I just said that)…. Because they are required to sell at retail. I pulled a lottery for a bottle of Wellers not too long ago, got it for $50. Seen it sell at other states and black market for $300ish. It ain’t worth $25 if you ask me. Larceny is a better pour.

Ol Grandad 114 should not be underrated. At least one bottle goes down on the beach on our yearly Flamingo camping trip. Good stuff!
Mercy! I hope this doesn’t go the way of the LHL thread.

Every time I check out, I tell the clerk to never tell anyone about this stuff. Soon it’ll be the next Blantons or Wellers. 😡

I went around the world recently, trying out different bourbons. I’m a Beam guy by DNA apparently. Grandmother lived off it…. skipped my dad…. And here I am!! A good friend of mine is a Beam rep. When they sold out to Japan, I put my foot down and said never again. I do my best to drink American if I can.

My wife and I did a tour of the Appleton Estate Distillery on our honeymoon many years ago. The first sample off the bus was white lightning (straight off the distiller but unaged with a little juice mixed in) and they called it Jungle Juice but I thought it was pure evil and felt like your mouth was on fire. Each sample got better after that initial hit and by the end of tour and many samples later, we made our maximum legal purchases to bring back to US. My favorite, and unrelated to the spiced discussion, was a banana rum cream that I have never seen anywhere else but Jamaica. It was fantastic over ice cream, while it lasted! Not trying to derail but it brought back some great memories and opened my eyes to the variety of possibilities of what you can do with Rum. Based on all of these suggestions, I am going to have to try and find some of these new varieties I have not tried and enjoy again.

I have a similar story from Cancun. The wife and I took a booze cruise catamaran over to Isla Mujeres. They pumped us full of everything trying to get every last dollar out us. Great trip and absolutely beautiful. The crew loved us. I got to helm the boat and me and the captain even swapped shirts. Still got it hanging in the closet somewhere. On the island We sampled all kinds of rum and “cuban” cigars. One rum stood above the rest. It was almond flavored!! Never would have put those two together to save my life. But, it was awesome and I took a bottle back with us. We finally had to get on a plane and come back home. This is when everything was high alert. Threw my carry-on on the X-ray belt and sure as shit…. They needed to confiscate my unopened bottle of rum. I pleaded, bitched and moaned, try to slip the guy a $20, you name it. Watched them throw the bottle into a 55 gallon trash can full of bottles of booze. Now I’m livid… these A-holes probably haven’t paid for a drink in years thanks to “security” protocols. I zip my bag up and headed through the doors to get to the terminal. What is exactly on the other side of these doors you ask??? A f’n liquor store!!!! 😡😡😡 The wife at this point is laughing her ass off on the inside while smoke is rolling out my ears. So I look for that almond rum with no luck, I find a fancy looking bottle of tequila and proceeded to pay for another bottle of souvenir booze and head to the gate. Sorry this is winded….. so low and behold as we’re waiting to board I’m the lucky lottery winner of customs doing random bag checks. I’m at this point contemplating doing prison time in Mexico!! 🤣😂🤣 Dude goes through my shit…. again. Gabs the bottle of tequila and puts it back in my bag. WTF!?!? So I ask, how come they took my unopened bottle at security?? Well sir, they operate under different protocols than we do. About half way home and half that bottle of tequila in me, I finally said something to my wife…. You can go ahead and laugh now!!🤣😂🤣

as you originally asked, a great , very unusual spiced rum option is from Old St.Pete distillery. I use it in cocktails and also just on ice as a sipper. I even add a small amount to sangria pitchers in the summer months. You will see mixed reviews on it since it is not the average run of the mill spiced rum, but it may be really good in the way you are looking to pour. When I get home I will try the Orleans cocktail you described it sounds interesting for sure St. Petersburg Distillery Old St. Pete Rum & Spice

Thank you. I’m about to head to the store now and see what I can find, then gear the boat up for tomorrow. 😁

Still not much to brag about at my better store. I was able to pick this up. Not too bad. Cool thing is we have a bunch of rum made in North Carolina that I didn’t know about. I’ll be trying those next.
