1997 carolina skiff 19ft shifter mounts to right side of center council it is extremely stiff to shift so i had moved shift cable 1 hole closer to pivot in control box quicksilver
style i had just lubed cables and bam shifts like a dream except no reverse and alot of angry noises my question is is it acceptable to use the inner hole on the shifter arm and just re adjust at the motor or am i just wasting my time

motor is a elpto 2002 merc 50hp 2 stroke
please excuse my ignorance as this is my first boat

I don’t believe you will be able to adjust it to shift both directions in the hole you have it in. Take cable loose at both ends and check that it moves smoothly with zero binding and minimal friction. Anything besides a nice smooth back and fourth and the cable should be replaced.
