Ram mount would be the best option. They make a fly rod/spinning rod holder and have plenty of parts to build what you need. Maybe these two would do the trick:

looks like they make that claw in 3 sizes to best fit the tubing on your bike frame.

I have a rack on the back of my bike that I added a couple bungee straps to so I can carry a rod case. I don't think I want to ride down trails with a rod assembled, I would break it for sure.

It certainly would be as cheap as a DIY option but I would go with an an aluminum rack (like a Delta "MegaRack Ultra") and then mount a Scotty or Ram base on it depending on your preference. You might look kind of ridiculous rolling down the road (bike with a giant antenna) but it would get the job done securely.

What scenario would you want a fully rigged rod with you on the bike? Would you be using the bike to get from spot to spot after initially rigging up?

also, we talking true mountain biking or on sidewalks and such?

Looks good but hoping for a DIY hack. Thanks for posting the links.

Mostly surface streets. Some short rides on hard bike paths in the bayfront state park next to us.

I wouldn’t want to ride with a 9’ rod sticking up from a bike. It’s going to be at least 10’ high since it’ll be mounted up off the ground. Low tree branches, etc. are a concern. Consider just backpacking the rod in its tube and your gear and rigging up once at the water.

if you must carry a rigged rod, a lite gauge pvc strapped parallel to the top tube (sitting between your legs) with the rod broken down into 2 pieces would be my first instinct. You could cut out a slot on the bottom of pipe so the reel seat slides further into the tube. Bungee cord attached to the top of pvc and looped around rod butt to prevent it from sliding out. Top section can be held inside the reel pouch but I’d find a way to prevent it from falling out.
Good luck and post pics

That's what I had as a kid.

2" schedule 20 PVC with a slot in the bottom of the tube for the reel seat. Mounted with two hose clamps. Whole thing less than 10 bucks and you can cut it with a serrated knife. We then cut off a 2"pc of the slotted end of the tube and that could be snapped over the main tube behind the reel seat, covering the slot to hold everything in the tube. Rod tip sticks out the back. Breaking the rod down into two pc less than 5' each would be best.

For a time when I lived near the beach, I did this with a 10ft 3" PVC for a surf rod, clamped onto a beach cruser. The surf rod was a 1pc custom and it was so long that it needed to be protected. More than once the tip was broken off by a sharp turn or someone coming up from behind who didn't see it.

Paint some flames on that sucker and you're all set...a fishing rod holder is much cooler than a baseball card in the spokes.

Honestly, I’d get a rod tube like this.

You can keep your rod rigged down to two pieces, it takes only a minute to pull out and get ready and you won’t risk breaking a rod with some sort of contraption hanging off of your bike.
I use to do a lot of bike fishing trips growing up, like most of us on here probably, and seen/broke my fair share of rods to stupid incidents. I would risk rolling around with a rigged fly rod sticking out.
