Hi everyone, it’s been a few years since I’ve been on, I’ve been busy fishing. Lol
I run a Eastcape Lostman scooter w/Etech 60. Never had a issues till January and had to rebuild carb and a few other things, then last month lower unit went out. Insurance is covering lower unit. Thinking about going to a F70.
My skiff never ran faster than 29 mph. I raise the motor and installed Bobs low water pickup and had to close the vent in the tunnel and lost 3 mph so I’m running 26 now. I’d like to run in the low 30’s. Any thoughts?

My mechanic and a fishing buddy says Etech have been crap since they came out. Mine couldn’t have had over 200 hrs on it. I fish at the coast but I run it in the lake before I go home every trip but still had a lot of corrosion in January. Ins is giving 75% of the cost of a new F70. I just want to be sure I get the best motor.

E-Tec motors don’t have carburetors -they’re entirely fuel injected. I’ll bet anything that “mechanic” who’s bad mouthing them isn’t a factory trained technician either...

Hope you’re able to find a brand you like. If you want to learn a bit more about E-Tec motors give me a call. I’ve been running them since 2005- and we’ll be re-powering again this coming week. Best motors I’ve ever had (current one around 2400 hours). All in hard commercial service. My average round trip into the backcountry of the ‘glades is around seventy miles...

As Lemay stated no Carbs on a Etec! Now as far as a 60 Etec and Lostmen combo goes, my last skiff was a Lostmen/60 Etec and ran 34-36 mph. Granted it was not a scooter or tunnel, I would imagine you should see 31-33 mph though when propped correctly. I ran a Viper 14x17p on that skiff and was the best off the shelf prop I found.

That was me trying to remember what was done. Maybe it injection problems. It was not the same tech that did the repairs that downed ETech and I’m not here to down them either. Just trying to get some help deciding on a new motor.

What is the new 60?

It is a 2014 ETEC 60. Lower unit was out and I was thinking about just getting a different motor. Maybe a Yamaha F70 since they weight about the same.
But After talking to a few more people I’ve about decided to fix the ETEC 60 and move on. Might get a Viper 14 x 17 prop and see if that helps with speed.

I like Etec. Been running my 50 since 2006. Has been great. Minor issues. Never a break down. Can’t comment on other makes as I never ran them and my previous motors are pre 1999. Being that old has no meaning in this conversation. One other note. They all have service centers. And they don’t just sell oil. Everything man made will break.

I'm told that my new motor (E-Tec 90, number four...) will arrive next week so I may have run my last trip with my old motor today - a full 77 mile run from Flamingo out to the coast where we were chased around by storms for an hour or two before they cleared up...

I couldn't help but think it would serve me right if the motor at more than 2400 hours didn't get us back - but as usual it just keep plugging away...

I owned a trouble free 30 HP 2 cycle Tohatsu for twelve years. All saltwater. No problems. I realize the new small four cycle HP have not been on the market for long, but I do not know anyone with a four cycle Tohatsu 60 HP or less that has had a trouble free run in the salt with more than 200 hrs or so. I lot of them are out there being used now, some good performance testing in progress.

Something to remember about outboards (no matter who makes them...)...

A recreational user will have to be on the water a lot to run up 100 operating hours in a year's time... In my case, as a commercial operator... I'll run up a 100 hours in a month (April - my busiest month...) most years.

Most current motors will have an hour meter built into their motor's operating system so their techs will be able to tell them exactly how many hours an engine has on it. As an old school type, I long ago learned not to rig a skiff without an hour meter as part of the gauges I set up since older motors never had any way of knowing that info otherwise... and operating hours is what your maintenance should be based on...
