I am a former part time guide from the keys moved to Hilton Head a couple years ago and planning to purchase a new 18' skiff. I will have a co pilot trolling motor which is a new accessory for me. What length poles are you guys using in the low country for fly fishing and light tackle. Im thinking 22' per the normal formula. any insight with these much larger tides will be appreciated. Thanks

As long as you can, I use a 24.
We do not have expansive hard sand flats here. You will appreciate the extra length when crossing a creek or you get blown back slightly from a shoreline as well as when some sinks into the mud.

I agree with BrownDog longest you can manage. That sucking mud up there will take a couple of feet off. Mine is 21 and I always want it longer

Throw the formula away. If you pole a lot, always buy the best you can afford and the longest you can manage.

Agree 100%, go as long as you can. The 1 pc poles are really lite so a 22'/24' is very manageable. The poling water around HHI is not deep. Its either Flood Tide or Low tide so your in a foot or less water in most cases. Just got to make sure you have a spot to store it lol
