I'm just looking for advice as to how to reinstall carpet under the gunnel in my 03' Hells Bay Whipray. I don't have the old carpet because it came out in lots of small pieces and it's not as straight forward as I hoped especially due to the undulations. From what I've heard Seadek may not adhere well because of those undulations either. Here's a pic of the current state. Not sure what to use to make a template because of the curves either. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What Tilly_Copano said...or cardboard. I’m in a similar situation with my Marquesa but not quite that bad yet. Seadek will work but I’d pay for a professional install with a warranty that way if it fails you can have it fixed on someone else’s time. I am also seriously considering having it sprayed with LineX and adding small seadek squares for the reels afterwards.

@lost1317 did you wrap up this project? It's on my to-do list, too.

Hell's Bay buys their carpet from Home Depot. TrafficMaster "Elevations" line. They use DAP Weldwood contact cement to apply. I talked with Tom Gordon about tips and tricks for installation. He told me the Skiff Shop uses a contact cement spray on the carpet and the DAP under the gunwales. I can't remember the name of the spray he mentioned. He also said they start from the bottom edge and work their way up. I do not know if they try to template or not. I won't quote the price he gave me because it might have changed, but it was a great deal just to have those guys take care of it. Granted, you might have to wait in line a while.

I stripped my carpet out in 2018 (link to thread) and have had installation of new carpet on my to-do list for almost two years. Limited free time means I'm not bothered enough by the lack of carpet to prioritize it over getting on the water. The fish don't care if there's carpet under the gunwales, so I just keep covers on my fly reels.

I would recommend cleaning that off and wiping it down. Then spray it with bedliner material of your color. Monstaliner is really good
I’ll second this! Monsta liner, Raptor liner, linerxtreeme, sem... all good products that will protect your equipment and not hold sand. And doesn’t shrink up like the foam stuff does.

If you are set on using carpet, wipe the area down and scrub a little with MEK. Outdoor carpet is pretty cheap and easy to work with so you can measure and cut to fit without too much difficulty. Use contact cement to stick it in place. Make sure you dry fit a couple times and it wouldn't hurt to get some help when you actually go to stick it on. Once that contact cement grabs, it is hard to get it off and reposition the carpet.
I really like the bedliner idea with SeaDeck reel pads though.

Not sure where you’re located but https://www.castawaycustoms.com/ has done many under gunnel replacements with seadek. You may have a dealer close by. I myself like carpet for the retro side of it. My best friend is actually the owner and has offered to redo my Gordon under gunnels for free. But I’m stubborn and want to stick with carpet. I’ll prob eventually do seadek though.
