I am not a motor guy. I can tear things apart and clean fix and put back together but if you ask me what a part is I wouldn't have a clue. So I have a 2 stroke %hp mercury on my drift boat. Yesterday i was motoring up river after fishing down and it was running fine we stopped at a spot to fish it again, when I started it back up I gave it gas and it died. It would crank up no problem then die when I would give it gas. Today I put it in a tub and it took 4 or 5 pulls to start.(usually starts on the first pull) but then it ran fine. Stopped it and started it 5 times with no issues. Any ideas why it would happen. Want to try to keep this from happening again, we had to row up river about a mile.

I had an old 'rude 4hp that'd do that.
Run great all morning, try to restart and it'd sputter, wouldn't catch, flooded.
If I tapped on the float bowl with the back end of a screwdriver, then tried,
she'd fire up and would run fine until the next stop.
Ended up doing a rebuild of the carb when I figured out the float valve was sticking.
