This is my first foray into the micro skiff world. It's a great site here, and I'll post more up about the boat later.
I wanted to start with the engine though. I recently picked up a used IPB 16 with a 1989 Mercury 40hp. When I got it, the prop was spun, and there wasn't water coming out of the telltale on the muffs. I replaced the water pump gaskets and impeller, and put on a new prop first thing.
After that it was hard to start and there still wasn't any water. I changed the plugs and dumped most of the gas. Still sucks to start, but I'm figuring that out. It requires a lot of throttle and choke to start. I also put a vacuum on the telltale and it started pumping water. So I thought maybe it was just the muffs.
All that, and I still wasn't really happy with it, but I put it in the water yesterday evening.
Problems I found on the water:
Forward movement in neutral
Won't idle ~500 rpm's according to tach.
Steam/smoke out of telltale until in gear and hitting about ~1200 rpm
No big surprise - overheats while idling/moving slow.
It planes around 3000rpm and seems happy to run there. The water is pretty hot coming out of the telltale, but it has a good flow.
I'm new to outboard repair, and don't have a lot of experience with them. Are idling issues like this common for this year and type of motor? Do these impellers normally not move water at idle and lower rpms?
Where do you guys think I should start next? I have the service manual and it's serial C159200 - C221499
