So it's been quite a few years since I've had any experience with any Lowrance products. I recently picked up a deal on a Lowrance HDS-9 Gen 3 with no transducer, for a project skiff I am working on. The unit was a warranty replacement and is practically new. But I can't tell is it's a "Carbon" unit or not and don't really know the difference if it is one or not. I'm looking to have some sort of good imaging for a few shallow reefs and debris I want to fish and want to see where the fish and also the bait are holding. Also I fish some shorelines in some rivers and deep creeks where the deeper swift water has washed out the bank out from under the mangrove roots, as well as seeing up under some deeper docks where some fish will hold during the daytime.

Does anyone have some experience with a good crisp resolution transducer that can do somewhat of a side scan/ 3D resolution, without going too expensive like the cost of a StructureScan 3D transducer ($1k)? Any that have used the regular StructureScan transducer or the Lowrance Active Imaging 3-in-1 transducer? How does it preform? I can get a deal on a Lowrance TotalScan Skimmer Transducer with Structure Scan HD. Any good? Is it compatible with my unit? Anyone have problems with the flip down mounting bracket or the hull bottom mount? Anyone ever use an oil bath interior hull mount transducer (and the good vs bad)? Anyone have any experience with just the cheap flip down generic transducer on the HDS?

Do they make a better, more water tight power plug / harness for this unit? Nothing worse than having fouled up plugs from the salt. Due to that, I'd dash mount it if I had the real estate to do so. But I don't.

Also, anyone having any difficulty with the FMT chip with this unit?

I've seen all of there for around the $200 range +/- new, reman or slightly used and that is where I'm hoping to keep my budget for that.

Also, has anyone had an HDS9 mounted in one of those sealed swivel mount systems, that keep saltwater out and sticky fingers from nabbing your unit while you are parked at the motel? OR one of those swing arm mounts.

I'll be watching this to learn a bit myself... as far as electronics go, if you want to keep them safe - remove them whenever you're away from home if you want to keep them... never leave them on your skiff, period.

Of course I've been living near Miami for a lot of years so I'm a bit careful. I'm sure other places don't have the dedicated thieves we have...

3 in 1 will give you all that you are asking for except in hull mounting. Structure scan plus will be two transducers, plus a y cable I believe. No complaints with the transom mount for it at all. If you hit bottom or a floater your lower unit is gonna take the brunt of any impact if it’s installed correctly anyway.
