Out for a morning paddle at dawn today, before work,
saw something I've never run into before. A gar pulling hang time.
School of minnows being herded down the canal,
and a 30 inch gar busting up through the middle of them.
Jumped completely clear of the water 4 times.
Anyone else ever run into this behavior?
I always thought gar were ambush/lunge feeders, not active pursuit.  :-?

It can only be blamed on the mullet run

    Wait, hold on a minute...

    You still work?

I've seen it at one point or another, but it is rare. Sounds like the bait was packed tight and the gar just couldn't let the opportunity get away. Where was your hookless Zara Spook? That would have been fun.

Not sure about their range but sturgeon will jump like that and look similar with their pointy nose. Sounds like you may have been seeing gar but we see sturgeon behaving like that all the time.
