Looking for book recommendations for someone learning the salt water side of fly fishing. I live in the Florida Keys so anything specific to the keys is a plus. I have had some success with bonefish and tarpon but could always use improvement. Still working to get my first permit on fly.

Good luck with the Permit, some people never get even one on a fly!

Chico Fernandez's Fly-Fishing for Redfish gives a very solid overview of most aspects of shallow water fly fishing. He speaks extensively about fishing Florida Bay, Whipray and the Everglades.

As someone who just started Chico's book, I can attest to the above response's accuracy. Loving it so far and have learned more in the first few chapters than I did in probably 10+ hours of Youtube videos

Dang, it is a pricey one eh! Haha
get Lords of the Fly by Monte Burke
it's about Homosassa rather than the Keys, but every tarpon fan should have a copy

also, Chico's Flyfishing for Bonefish is a good read, to go along with his Redfish book.

Dr. Aaron Adams has written several books that have helped me over the years. I would caution though as they are from a marine biologist standpoint, but provide so much information and are definitely worth the read. I have an older version of this one and it is still extremely relevant.

I actually saw the bonefish one when I looked up Chico's redfish book and added it to the cart haha.
I will check out lords of the fly too, I have heard of that one awhile back but never wrote it down.
Thank you!

If I had to rank them:

Lefty's Fly Fishing in Saltwater - it is a classic, all round book. You'll learn the most from this book.
Chico's book - good in addition to Lefty's book

Dr. Aaron Adam's book is great, but it is really next level information and is something you can get to a few years down the line. It goes into the eye cells of the fish, why some fish like certain colors, habitat of prey, etc. Although he is a marine biologist, he is a damn good passionate angler too.

A Passion for Tarpon - this is more about the history of tarpon than it is the tactics, although there are great sections on how to fish for them. I've studied it and learned, but without starting with the fundamentals from Lefty's book, it is jumping ahead and also only focuses on tarpon.

I suggest focusing on Lefty's book, put stuff into practice, and then expanding your knowledge as time progresses. Too much at once is exactly that - too much. It is difficult to retain that much info without applying it first.
