A lot of years ago (when the Seaquarium was a bit newer than it is now....) the Reef tank held an assortment of permit, along with all the other fishies... One of them, though, was way over fifty pounds and would have easily broken all the existing permit records for that time... Guys who'd spent days chasing permit on fly using the early patterns that rarely worked (we're talking pre-Merkin era....) would show up at the Seaquarium and spend hours just drooling at the Reef windows watching those fish... You knew they were flats anglers since they all had terrible sunburns and raccoon eyes....

Come to think of it - once I learned how to catch permit on jigs - I was hard pressed to even consider a fly rod for permit back then... Of course this was back when there were only three guides for all of Biscayne Bay.. .Bill Curtis, Lee Baker - and one other fella...
