How to clean oil out of a portable gas tank?

1159 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  MRichardson
Hello,

I recently purchased a 4stroke for my Gheenoe which used to have a 2 stoke. I would prefer using my old tank that was used with the 2stroke because it had a gas gauge on it. Anyone know how to clean the oil/gas out so that it does not mess up the new 4stroke?

Thanks,
J

You won't mess up your 4 stroke

I run left over pre mix in my 4 stroke NO problems

Just what you need in a fuel tank...soap and water!
LOL. Sounds risky. I think I will just dump and rinse with gas.

suit yourself. I did mine and never had an issue! I put a rag inside the tank set it on its side in the sun for a day and was good to go the next.
Gasoline itself is the perfect solvent and will remove any remaining oil. Fill that tank and run it. Your second tank fill won’t have a trace of oil remaining...

Agree with above. Burn it. I use same fuel for my edger in my mower.

Well if you are looking to get rid of the fuel, I'd say go to that pesky neighbor that you don't like and dump on their grass. Make sure you get creative and draw a beautiful design in their front yard for all to see. Only kidding, dump it in a safe and non hazardous manner. Rinse with fuel like mentioned above.

Light it if you really hate your neighbor and leave a burn trail.

The fuel tank in my garage for lawn equipment is full of 100:1. I run the 4 stroke lawnmower off this tank and have been years. Zero issues.

At the river camp I have a fuel tank with 100:1 that we use for everything. My dad claims he hasn't used regular fuel in a four wheeler since 1998.
Running a little oil thru a 4 stroke versus a little soap/water.. hmm, which is worse...
