Is it possible to just swap out garmin units if the transducer/wiring/etc is already installed from an older model? Ended up with a boat that included a garmin gpsmap 400/500 but no chip, and figured it'd be better to just upgrade the unit with a preinstalled chip for only a few hundred more than buying just the new bluecharts g3 and keeping the older model.

It depends. The transducers will most likely work. If map data is what you are really after, the old unit may not run the new chip. You’ll like the faster processor speed of the new unit. If you are happy with the pre-loaded maps on the new unit then it is likely a plug and play swap. Email Garmin tech support just to be sure.
