Fly Line

Just got a new 7-9wt to add to the collection, and wondering recommendations on fly lines(brand, wt, etc)? I have a 8wt Galvan with Rio Summer Redfish line on it, and it works great. I’m fishing redfish in SE LA mostly, and just wanted to see thoughts on what everyone likes.

thanks!

Lots of posts on this - use the advanced search for "fly line" and "line recommendations" - you'll find a lot has been posted.

This outta be a fun rabbit hole.. lol..
I’m fairly new to fly fishing, so my opinion on this isn’t necessarily valid, but on my 7/8, I’m using 9wt rio redfish as well. Only reason I’m using 9 was my cheap ass found it on close out for 50$, but it works well.

“It works great”. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Save your money for now.

If something works "great", why spend money looking for something that won't?

The best suited fly line is completely rod dependent. If you provide brand and model of rod you bought, others here with the same rod might be able to recommend something. However, I'll agree with the others above. If the line and reel you currently have work great, there's no need to shop around for something else.

I have found the SA Grand Slam line to be a really good all around line for throwing a variety of fly sizes and weights. It seems to also work well with a variety of different rods and actions.
Cortland Liquid Crystal lines are really good in the summer heat ..lots of choices for ya..

I will second the Cortland line. I put a Grand Slam line on a new rod and it really didn't work that well, went to the Cortland line and it worked awesome. I put the Grand Slam on another rod configured a little different (more guides) and it did good on that rod. Of course if you got something that already works why change. Just wear it out, then replace it.

Well, any 8 wt rod you can buy at any price point could and probably should be labeled as such. They’ll all throw a line 1 wt class above or below their rating just fine. Whether the owner can or can’t is a different issue.
No idea about what rod. Are we being trolled?
Usually in SE LA you’ll want a quick loading line. Something a little front end heavy. Reds will pop close by in muddy water and you don’t have time to false cast. Each rod has a different flex, so it’s best to try different lines with them. Unfortunately the old time fly shops that have lines to try are being pushed out by cheaper online shops.
Have chasin them LA pumpkins.

Do choose line color on what best suits your clarity/environment. Rio/airflo/SA all preference. All good line.
I just put Royal Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper line on one of my reels to try it out. Paired with an 8wt Redington Predator rod. Great Combo.
