I have booked Capt. Clay for one day on Molokai. We are staying on Maui. He primarily wade fishes. There will be 4 of us but only one fly guy. I just ordered some Buggs Bone Fish jigs. One of his boats is a Shallow Runner (Shallow Sport knock off).

Anyone fished for Hawaii bones and have some tips? Like flies and how to strip?

Capt. Clay is the man - I fished w him last spring and we had a blast. Plenty of fish, and big. Flats are a bit on the deeper side but the fish show up neon green and sometimes lay up like tarpon. We used his ‘squimp’ fly mostly...basic bendback shrimp with lead eyes. Worked great. Ran over a bunch of milkfish on the way in, would have loved to have had a chance to fish them, maybe be ready for that. Also caught some small trevale and had shots at nicer ones in the 15# range. Fly in early and have breakfast at the bakery on Molokai. The purple poi donuts are amazing.

Called Clay, this pm with questions. He provides leader which is straight 20lb did not ask if Fluor. Also provides flys. He likes Sage Ignitor and is currently using Rio Flats Pro fly line. I have not met him but I sure like him from talking on phone. He has a lot experience and has tried a lot of different fly line company’s over the years.

Heavier leader is probably due to the rocks and coral there. The habitat is different than the Bahamas or etc. They can hit the edge of a pancake flat and go straight down. In my pic below you may be able to see where the water goes light to dark. That's a several hundred foot drop into blue water...so you have to put the heat on them before they take you over the edge.

Those Hawaiian bones are badasses. :D

Got one Molokai bone. Captain Clay estimated 7 to 8Lbs. I had several other good chances but blew them for various reasons. Made about 25 ft cast to left and behind fish and he turned on fly after 2 strips. In the backing in seconds.
