To me it did not look like a dinosaur. With that big eye it was a deep water creature.
Didn't say how he caught it, fly, bait or floating on the surface

“We were looking for blue halibut which is a rare species about 5 miles offshore. I had four hooks on one line and felt something quite big on the end of it. It took me about 30 minutes to reel it in because it was over 2,600 feet deep.”

I don't think they are that rare.
My dad and I were using frozen anchovies, 6 oz lead to get us on the bottom on a drift on the north side of the SF bar. Started in about 60' and he hooked up at around 80'.
Brought it up and it had big brown eyes and a pair of human looking buck teeth. This was back in the late 60's and unsurprising to me he knew what it was. Got to admit, never seen another since.

Hell, I caught one on a tenkara with a chunk of dead scrimp back in the summer of 1932...
