Fish Eating Odd Things

I saw a tarpon eat a houndfish today and got me thinking about this post. Not that a houndfish is necessarily odd but it sure is a tough size fish to eat.

I‘ve seen baby turtles in dolphin. What else do you guys have?

Not really odd, but back when I used to manage a campground we had a big Bass pond right next to the snack shack, and any live mice that I caught in the snack shack I'd throw in the pond for the Bass. My father in law thought I was full of shit that they would eat the mice until I showed him one day, he couldn't believe it
Some of the best beach snook and tarpon fishing is during a turtle hatch… I’ve used snakeheads as swordfish baits deep dropping, and know guys who have used iguanas as bait successfully too.
Houndfish used to be a “secret” bait for a certain pier in south Florida for monster snook. We would buy them off the people who caught them as by-catch that weren’t in the know.

Caught about a 120-130# tarpon in Costa Rica with some locals. They killed it and cleaned about a dozen baby sea turtles out of it. I recall it being a damn fine meal, just made a soup out of it.

We had a sailfish billing a Coke can in the spread of Puerto Aventuras, Mexico one time. I also caught a sheepshead on a Rapala Twitching' Rap plug. He was hooked in the roof of his mouth, not foul-hooked.

I recall as a kid that catfish were a popular tarpon bait in some crowds.

Not sure if this is really odd, but I have caught many redfish over the years on a white Zoom Horny Toad.

Many years ago, long before Yozuris and other high end plugs were available, the plug we used the most was the old Seabee (bright chrome swimming minnow about six inches long) and when the bill was snapped off we’d remove the hooks, replace them with a large single treble at the rear, rig it with a wire leader for big ‘cudas and sharks up on the flats. We’d heave it as far as possible and race it back, skipping at the surface all the way, drawing huge explosions as big ‘cudas chased it down…
One day up on a Stiltsville flat I had a very big bonefish (well over ten pounds ) chase it all the way back to my skiff trying to eat it, rolling over on its back several times to bring its mouth in play… Once it saw my skiff -it was all over and I never saw it again… As long asI live though I’ll remember that bonefish trying to figure out how to eat that plug…

I've seen flounder jump clear of the water more than once chasing bait. I'd never even considered the possibility until I saw it. They're pretty aggressive feeders.

Ive got a few.
Dolphins playing with tarpon and then eating them in Card Sound

Im finding alot of snakeheads facing the bank in my area, waiting to eat young iguanas that burrow on the burm, walking up to the bank and the iguanas would run in the water and snakeheads would snatch them up.

During the summer when huge patches of sargassum weeds gets pushed onto the shore, theres always small juvie tripletails, and watching TTs skip across the water to get away from snook is amusing.

My dad caught a 42 inch sturgeon on a deceiver,
fishing for stripers in Franks Track near Bethel Island.
While he was fighting it I thought it was going to be like what happened a trip a couple weeks before when I foul hooked a 25 pound carb.

I've seen those videos; I think someone posted some of them here a few years back. Those GTs look like a lot of fun. I always get tickled at folks who curse jack crevalle, but say they'd like to fish for GTs. Basically the same tackle-taxing thug apex predators.
