    Silly question:

What would be the recommended cloth to lay over 1708 to get a nice, smooth finish or is it just a case of fair & sand, fair & sand, fair & sand?

You can either use peel ply to try and smooth out the finish to limit fairing. Or you can top it with some 6oz cloth which would require a bit of fairing, but not to bad.

Sorry to be a complete nerk....but what is 'peel ply'?
Sorry, I'm utterly new to glass work. This gheenoe rebuild/reconfigure is the first time I've ever worked with fiberglass.

It's a type of plastic like cloth that you apply over the wet glass. Then roll out at the bubbles. Once cured you peel it off leaving a much smoother surface under it.

Put a couple layers of light csm and then the 6oz and it will be smooth enough.

Since you are being anal :) mix up some phenolic/glass beads to the consistency of syrup and you can do a hot coat.

Remember that any resin put on without the benefit of glass is susceptible to cracking.
