I think I've tried everything for these annoying pests while fishing and other than long sleeves, pants, and a buff does anything work to keep them at bay? I've tried every spray and the butane powered unit and it doesn't seem to phase them. Does any product REALLY work? I've heard smoking a cigar is the trick and will start smoking them again if that's what I have to do. 😆

SSS is what we used as kids and it works. When we'd play our baseball games at Crystal River the noseeums were so thick that 15 feet above the ground it was like fog.

I think SSS basically drowns the gnats as much as repels them. Some of the newer ones with eucalyptus and lemon grass seem to work
Man I remember them days. I’m pretty sure you could smell it a block away to..lol.

This works for me Insect Repellent Clothing | Built-in Bug Protection | Insect Shield
Used this while turkey hunting in green swamp and could hear mosquitoes all buzzing around me but nary a bite. Found it to be effective on nagseeums as well…YMMV. They should have a link to manufacturers who use their treatment in the garments they sell; otherwise they will treat yours if you prefer and send back to you.

Most of the "bug proof/bug off" clothing is simply infused/washed with permethrin. If you want to go that way several companies make sprays that can be sprayed directly on clothing and allowed to dry. If you are going to treat a bunch of clothes it is more economical to buy a permethrin concentrate and dilute it. I did that prior to a colombia peacock bass trip. I diluted the permethrin ti the concentration of the more expensive sprays, soaked my clothes in it, rung them out and let them air dry. Then I did a light cycle machine wash and low heat dry. In 7 days in jungle and tents I only had bugs on bare skin, I dealt with those with a combination of repel, deet and Picardin.

Would using this method last up to 70 washes? This might be a better solution and certainly a better right now, one. My thought process was a garments useful life is probably about 70 washes and if it was just a few dollar difference between treated and untreated I’d buy the IS garment.

Might rethink this depending on cost of permethrin concentrate and how long it stays in garment. I have sprayed Sawyers permethrin on garments and just hung them to dry before use; Do not make the mistake of wearing garments not fully dry as my buddy did just that and ended up with a weird rash I believe he still has, years later.

Not sure if the bugs you're talking about are the same as the gnats in the LA marsh but Amber Romance perfume from Victoria's Secret works great in the marsh. When I first was told to try it I thought I could faintly hear banjo music starting but the stuff really works. There's a knockoff made by Hawk that works well too. MARSH ROMANCE 8oz Bottle

+1 on this! The stuff works. Smelling like a cheap hooker is 100x better than getting carried away by those South LA creatures!

I worked on the development

My thanks to you. Saved me from a few miserable days on the water.

SSS was like holy water when I was a kid, and you guys are right, that smell in permanently ingrained. Thing is, I can't recall how well it actually worked back then, and haven't used it in any recent memory. I've tried the lemon/eucalyptus Repel, it works, but DEET products seem to outperform it--especially with ticks. I've heard/seen many people along the way using VS Amber Romance, but have never tried it myself. I'd def err toward non-DEET products and have DEET as a last resort--stuff is nasty. I do treat some of my clothes with permethrin as well, but honestly, if you're having to spray yourself with bug spray anyway, might as well spray your clothes with it too.

I live just a little south of Savannah and deal with them little jokers all the time and this stuff works as good as as anything I've used, including backwoods and it smells good. I kept seeing a lot of the parents at my daughter's softball games spraying it on themselves and could not figure out why the heck they were spraying that stuff all over them. Finally I asked and they told me it was for the bugs and I thought they were crazy. A
fter doing some research there's actually quite a few studies that show that It is actually more effective than deet. It's not the oil itself but the coconut oils free fatty acid mixture—lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid It is actually repelling them.

Lemon Eucalyptus works on no seeums in the Glades. Never tried the one above but years ago there was a spray that was the bomb. Don’t think they make it anymore and I don’t recall the name. The Outlaw might remember, he turned us on to it.
Now days, a cigar and a buff up to the chin works. We only get them in the morning.

OK, that's good to know, but how does it work if you layer/mix it with Off to repel mosquitoes, as well ??
