Pm me your spots so I can get with Jake Paul we’ll blow your spots up
I’d hate for this old man to have to embarrass him in front of all his fans! Bad enough it’s looking like his bro is about to find out what the legend of Iron Mike is all about in February!🤣💪🏻

Back to earth... way back in 1996 when I was first guiding full time.. I had an offer to work as a camera boat operator for a fishing show (Mark Sosin's show all those years ago..). It was a two boat setup, Mark with a guide poling his skiff -fly fishing tarpon out in front of Ocean Reef, camera guy #1 aboard.... and me with the second camera guy poling behind them... I never worked so hard on the water, poling my fanny off trying to keep within filming distance of Mark... This was back in the days of big shoulder mounted cameras like you'd see at big football games - each one so sensitive to moisture that they had to be locked away if there was the slightest hint of rain (of course that show owned the camera gear - and the operators were employees of the show... adding to the weekly overhead..).

What I learned those three days convinced me that I'd never want to be part of any TV show where you're doing everything you can to come up with 22 minutes of film (all that's actually in a 30 minute show) each week. While at the same time showing every product your advertisers (where you make your money, if possible) are paying for...Not much fun at all... not at all...

By the way, for anyone that might actually have a great fishing spot.. don't tell a soul about it - not even your brother or your best friend... If one other person finds out about it - that spot is done, period... Another of those "Ask me how I know" deals... I provide tips and pointers all the time about my areas in the 'glades - since there are so many of them and a good number are also situational... There are lots of other places where that's not the case at all with very few really good fishing spots - and fewer each year...

I can still remember Al Pflueger coming to the fishing club we belonged to in 1979...and saying about Homosassa - it had great numbers of giant tarpon back then - with only a few fishing it ...- "it's all over there now...". This was in the late seventies, long before the general public learned about the giant tarpon there - and proceeded to love it to death... This was also well before the world record tarpon on fly was taken there- but that's another story entirely..

This maybe be controversial but what are the differences between youtubers and guides? Both have to exploit an area to be able to make money. There have been tons of hype videos created to push a guiding business and both are attempting to make a profit off of a resource. I see a lot of hero shots on guides Instagrams. I even see guides on here bitching about other guides. Lol.
Another big issue is when guides not only exploit an area as if the own it, but then they post kill shots of a party of X fishermen all with limits of dead fish they took from those same areas, as that is their "right" to earn a living by depriving others of the fishery that belongs to all. Just another flavor of burning a spot and ruining it.

I remember getting laughed at while fly fishing the dock lights 20 plus years ago as boats drove past me and didn’t think I could hear them.
Now it’s cool!
Can’t speak for freshWater but I miss the uncoolness of it in the salt.
Absolutely hilarious!!!! This recently happened to me earlier this spring while my wife and I were on an outing in SW Fl for a week for our anniversary. (Her idea and BEST anniversary present ever!) We rented a cabin on the water and would hang out on the dock while enjoying some adult beverages every night after fishing all day. It was mid-to-late incoming tide the first few days and progressively shifted to an outgoing toward the end of our stay, at which point I started to notice some good sized snook absolutely brutalizing a couple lights across the way. I decided I'd take the skiff out on the last night of our stay to make my offering. A couple hours before I pushed off the dock a group of boys down from GA showed up for a weekend stay and it was clear they were here primarily to party. When I pushed off they were out on their dock a couple cabins down. Got to the target light, directly across the little channel from their dock, hit the spot-lock and whipped out the 8wt. It was the dead of night with no wind and I could hear every snicker, which slowly but surely converted to cheers of encouragement and sighs of disbelief as I proceeded to pluck one 25"-30" fish after the other on the first cast for about 45 mins straight. Definitely a memory that won't ever leave the vault.

Now, regarding the filming, coming from and being primarily raised on the Central East coast of Fl, I have watched video after video after social media post (from "intruders" and guides alike) spoil and overpressure our fishery. Let's face it, to get the views, get the money, and get the fame, you've gotta tag the "big spot" on your youtube video. If not for that reason, then I'm all for it. Shoot the hell out of it and have a ton of fun doing it, without the locations.

Personally, I think there isn't much difference between guides and Youtubers. Both have to promote themselves enough to keep making money. However, neither needs to blow up a spot and exploit their area to "advertise".

The main difference between the two is that a guide is locked down to a general area. A videographer doesn't have a home turf to draw people to or keep them away from. I've seen guides and "content creators" both do things the right way and wrong way. Be one of those that does it the right way.

Not really.

The internet creates economies of scale for spot burning.

Also, guides don't show their best spots to a new client on day one. As trust is earned, repeat customers get access to better spots and more information. There are the clients that keep their mouths shut and there are the clients that go straight to IG.

So live streaming with gps coordinates updating as you move on the screen is frowned upon?

Speaking of the right way ... Years ago, I was fishing a public but hidden creek, near a bike trail, known only by us locals that fish it. Mad the mistake of taking the bike path out. A few minutes later, a clown comes over a hill, sees me, and screeches to a halt. The GoPro is on his helmet. Starts pumping me for where exactly, what I fish for, how to ... Cut him off and asked if he was recording. He said "yeah, for my Youtube Channel." Tried to explain what was polite, and he cut me off, saying "I don't care." Replied "I do, and you don't have my consent to use my image, nor any anything I say." He was surprised to learn that I could withdraw what he assumed, then p****d. Said "don't give a s%%t," and went on my way.

Aww Finnegan doesn’t like people that stand up for themselves. He wants us all to tolerate weak people’s BS.
