Ran and poled both boats yesterday in Miami.

21 powered with the new Tohatsu 115.
18 had a F70 (first Mangrove 18 not to use a Tohatsu 50/60).

The 21 is really a coooool boat. A true poling skiff at 21 feet. The show boat 21 was made in full carbon with Mangrove build, same layup schedule as the Mangrove Performance 18. The Mangrove 21 is substantially lighter than the prototype Chittum 21 built last year. We poled both boats on a very shallow sand flat and both bottomed out at about 7”. The 21 was very easy to pole. It spins very well. You really don’t feel like you’re pushing a 21 at all. It seemed easier than poling a 18 Snake Bight with 115. The light build of the Mangrove 21 makes the ride very soft. It eats up chop with ease.

The Mangrove Performance 18 floats surprisingly well with the F70. I found it easier to pole than my Snake Bight 18 w/ F70. It definitely is more responsive and torquey and peppy than the Snake Bight. We topped out at 43.3 mph with 2 x 200 + lb guys. That was with a prop that probably can be improved upon and a F70 with 3-4 hours on it. Chittum’s goal is to reach 45 mph with 2 guys and gear in this build/power configuration. Other than top end and to fish 3 guys, I’m still not sure this Performance Mangrove is better than the standard Mangrove with 40 lb lighter Tohatsu 60.

The finished Mangrove 21 is certainly more appealing this year than the prototype 21 from last year. I didn’t really check out all the hatches, etc. There’s a bow anchor locker in addition to the main bow locker. The rear deck has 4 hatches (1 can be a live well) plus a crab well on the port aft corner.

The Tohatsu 115 seemed strong & smooth. We didn’t really test the top end, but probably hit 45 mph. I understand the prototype Tohatsu 115 is 28 lbs heavier than the Mercury XS 115. The top section of the cowling blew off while we ran the boat yesterday, which prompted Tohatsu to send the Chittum team home early. Boat show drama...

That Mangrove is sitting great. I'd be interested to pole the 21 in a little wind. Wonder how manageable it is. I imagine it would still be better than my 18 Redfisher.

JT Van Zandt is supposed to be getting a 21 down here in Rockport soon. I am definitely interested to see how it runs and poles. That price tag, though... it costs as much as my first home.

Does he have it yet? I passed an all white Chittum Sunday coming thru town but didn't get a good look passing by, might have been a 21.
