@Zaraspook I transitioned to an iPad Pro just last year. The thing is a powerhouse with the M1 and Lightroom. Not the greatest for culling 2000+ wedding photos, but it is still wet behind the ears. I’m hoping I can finally ditch my pc. 🤞🏻
Ha! Luckily I have never had to shoot humans but this was always just a serious hobby for me. I shoot more humans with my iPhone because it’s just so handy and most of the time they don’t even know I’m shooting them which makes for the best shots. Incidentally, the portrait mode on the iPhone Pro is equal to portrait lenses that cost thousands of dollars!

I've had two people call me in the last month to recommend a starter camera for general photography and some nature. This is what I sent them. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1461735-REG/canon_2727c021_eos_rebel_t7_dslr.html
At $549 and lenses from 18mm to 300 mm a beginner can learn what they want and need, then bite the bullet for a professional grade camera and big glass if they want to pursue it seriously.
I'm still shooting DSLR because I have the Canon 5DS and 5DS-R which are 50.6 MP. My wife has switched to the R5 mirrorless, 45MP, and I can't see any difference in quality between our pics with the Canon 500 f4L and the 600 f4L IS-III. If the R5 had come out with 72 MP, as Canon had forecast I would have switched.

I’d love to do my editing on an iPad. Been using capture one. Any idea if that works well?

I haven’t even bothered to try it. I came from Adobe on my PC’s. Once if found out that Apple and Adobe had partnered up to bring the suite to the M1 chip, I was all in.

I just watched a review comparing LR with CaptureOne. The reviewers thought LR was superior in several ways. One important thing is that LR uses sliders which is far superior to CaptureOnes round wheel. LR for iPad is so similar to LR for computers that there is almost no learning curve like there is between CaptureOne for iPad and for computer. They are completely different. Don’t know about CaptureOne but the transition from LR to PS is one click there and one click back. It sounds like CaptureOne is a Canadian product. Every professional and serious hobbyists photographer I know uses LR/PS. Sorry, I just don’t know much about CaptureOne.

check out B&H Photo, they'll be able to point you in the right direction. I've used them many times for buying lenses and they've always gotten me exactly what I wanted
Check out the Olympus TG series. Point and shoot. Super easy and takes great shots. I've used one since film. They are waterproof, crush proof and freeze proof. They have 2 lens attachments and are a great all round in your pocket outdoor camera. If she really gets into it the world is going mirrorless fast and that could be an anniversary down the road......

I was a pro for three decades. Lots of great advice here. The only thing that I would add is along the lines of the iPhone recommendation. The “right” camera is the one that you will use. Same goes for processing software and hardware. In the end I was pretty much using everything that I cared to own and carry based on my task at hand.

No matter what you get, in the end you should almost always shoot RAW, expose manually, and invest in the best best optics you can. I’m not a pro anymore so my typical kit is my iPhone, mirrorless rangefinder and a ton of vintage optics… plus all the Cloud and redundant local storage I can afford 😁

The last one was with the 33mm f1.4. It's by far my favorite lens. I had the 35 f2, but this one is so much faster, sharper, and the low light performance is unmatched at the focal length. The 16 look awesome too, but I don't do a lot of wide angle stuff and I have the 16-80 which I think is a great all around lens.
Van i couldn't get your pic outta my head. Just got the 33 1.4. Haven't had much chance to fiddle with it yet but it is OMG sharp. Gives a near 3d effect in certain lighting.
