A friend of mine and myself were going to take our boats and go camping. Do a little extended trip and stay for few nights away from civilization along the wild Texas coast. Fly fishing mostly, around April after spring break is over. Looking for a 3 man tent, one for each of us (no Broke Back mountain here). Looking for something light, will stay dry and pack small. What have you tried and what has worked best? I am looking at the North Face Homestead Domey 3, any thoughts, something better? This will be set up on land at a chosen good wild spot to camp and not on the skiff.

I’ve had good success with the kelty brand for an entry level tent. They sell a few different models at dicks sporting goods and can normally be found on sale for around 100. They come with no-seeum mesh which is a bit finer mesh then most tents and great for beach/ sand camping.

North face and big Agnes are great tents but I’d spend my money on other fishing gear that you may use a bit more often IMO.

Check out sierra trading post. I would not pay full price for a tent unless I planned to use it multiple times a year. A 3 season tent should suit your needs. Look at actual floor dimensions, one companies 2 person is another's 3 person.

For boat camping I use a Zephyr 3 from Alps Mountaineering. I got it cheap about 5 or 6 years ago. I have been completely satisfied. Mostly mesh makes for cooler evenings if it is warm, and I often sleep without the fly. It is big enough that I take a super small, and low, chair into the tent and read at night away from the bugs. Never had the noseeums get through the mesh, and they can be fierce at the oyster bay chickee. I don't consider this tent to be light or pack small, but that is just in comparison to backpacking tents, like made by Lightheart Gear and others.

What’s your budget? Z packs makes an incredibly light and durable tent. The duplex is a two person and would be great and love mine. It packs down to the size of a shoe. And weighs a pound. But it’s not cheap.

I've had a Eureka Mountain Pass 2 for close to 30 years, they still make it in a 3 person. It's a borderline 3 to 4 season tent - which means it can handle anything where it won't be snowing. Relatively light, cheap, strong, packable, free standing, been around forever ...

If you are each going to have a tent, why a 3 man tent? I use a 2 man as a single person tent. The Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight tent packs small and is 4lbs. I’ve had mine for 16 years and it is tough. Great tent.

I have a 6 person tent by Eureka! Put three air mattresses and duflle bags (clothes) it is perfect size when my family camped.

i always increase the number of people x 2 to spec ratio for comfort.
Meaning if tent says 6, you can do 4. Tent says 4 you can do 2.

so for the price of a 6 man tent get 3 tents each rated for 2 peopleYour buddys burp, snore and fart just like you do. You really want to be sleeping next to two of them?

And then there’s the middle of the night piss. You want to be stumbling over someone or them over you? Being woken to the sound of unzip and zip of the tent door?

shop Amazon or Offer up. Coleman makes some decent tents.

Go as big as reasonable. Backpacking sometimes just a tarp and a ground cloth (if no bugs) otherwise a 1 to 2 person superlight - but got to take into consideration whether snow is a possibility, motorcycle camping a two to three person - same for camping out of a skiff I would, car camping - bring the kitchen sink. After a few decades you'll end up with a quiver of tents - wearing out the good ones - the not so good tend to be loaners

We have hogs and a lot of mosquitos on the barrier islands of the Texas coast. I want a little distance from the sides of the tent and also will store some gear in it. A three man tent is not much heavier than a 2 man and gives extra space for one person. It will only be me in the tent. I guess I am paranoid.

I was born on a Texas barrier island. I wouldn’t worry about pigs and the Clip Flashlight can handle mosquitoes and no see ums.

I 2nd Kelly brand tents. Affordable options and in a skiff the marginal amount of extra weight doesn’t matter. Many of their models have a great vestibule which can make camping on the beach a little more comfortable in a rain storm. I have owned multiple Kelty tents and they all hold up. Our current three person is big enough for me my fiancé and our two dogs on camping and hunting trips.
