New to the site. Need help deciding on 1st rod/reel. New to fly fishing<1yr. And Have spent sometime using an old garage sale setup. Now it’s time to upgrade.
Looking to fish bass and reds (Texas).
I got an opportunity to cast Orvis Recon 8wt 7’11” and really like the feel. Tried the BVk but didn’t like it as much. Is there anything else I should consider in this range <$500?? And is there any draw back to going with 7’11”vs 9’

Rod length is a matter of personal preference, but a 9ft may give you a an advantage fishing from a kayak or fighting a fish.
I'm not familiar with the Recon, but for $500, you can go to a flyshop, let them know what you are fishing for, your budget, and try before you buy. Most flyshops will have somewhere you can cast different rods and find what fits you best.
