Advice on 90hp 1720

Been nearly 5 years since posting...

i am considering pulling the trigger on a 2005 Carbon/Kevlar 1720 Action craft that is rigged with the original 90hp 2 stroke yamaha. A previous post made mention of some 1720s with this setup but not much info. A local mentioned 40mph top speed and good cruising with this setup. Mainly concerned about range and fuel economy as we fish out of whitewater bay and make what seems like long runs (60-90 miles in a day). can anyone chime in on any more specifics? Nice to be back into a flats boat after a long hiatus , hope im putting this in the right section.

I have a 1720 with a two-stroke Yamaha 115 and previously had the 90 Yamaha two-stroke on a 16’ Hewes Bonefisher.

I wouldn’t have wanted the Bonefisher motor on my 1720. Now, my 1720 isn’t carbon/kevlar so maybe we’re already into apples/oranges. If your potential boat truly does 40 with the 90 that’s comparable to mine.

It’s been a while since I ran WW out to Little Shark so my memory is a little foggy, but I think I did over 50 miles on about a half tank (15 gallons) so range-wise I think you’re fine with the 90.

I see, I would imagine a bone fisher is probably heavier though. It’s a shame the AC I mentioned is nearly perfect just worried about being too underpowered

Go with your gut on this.

I owned the non C/K version of the 1720, demoed with a 90 Merc 2 stroke and found it marginal.

Went with the 115 Yami 2 stroke and IMHO it was the prefect match for the hull. Ran just over 50 mph using a 4 blade and had an awesome hole shot.

If you are going to keep the C/K version light. such as sans trolling motor and limited to 2 persons who don't need the kitchen sink, the 90 will probably be adequate if propped correctly.

Just my .019999999 Sense.

That's a great motor, but not the most fuel efficient. That said, I ran a Maverick HPX 17 from Islamorada to the Cape Sable area, fished all day up the coast towards the Shark River, and ran back. Didn't have much left in the 25 gallon tank though! Might be a heavy boat for a 90. I would think a 115 would be a better motor.

Wow that’s a run...maybe my idea of 60 miles is a bit skewed lol. I don’t think I run that far. I’ll usually start at the whitewater ramp, run up joe river, cross East to lane bay and hells bay and then go home
