Abyss vs Lithium Pros

1175 Views 23 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  TurnMeLooseFLKeys
I've done some research on the boating threads, but am still undecided. BlueGabe on Youtube is touting Abyss batteries, but he's getting paid to do so.

What say y'all? Which would you go for? Anything better out there that won't absolutely destroy the wallet?

Don't have my hands on the boat yet, so I don't know the current battery setup. All I know is it doesn't have a tm, but I'm wanting to add a 24V to it. So it'll be a cranking battery and then two for the tm. Can I get by if only the tm batteries are lithium? Or should I have all three as lithiums?

Thanks in advance everyone. Trying to do some research ahead of time. Summer/lobster season is coming up quicker than I'd like and I wanna have the supplies before it's on me and I'm not ready.

Can’t speak for Abyss, but I’ve been running Lithium Pros for 2 years, made in America, great warranty.
Couldn’t be happier.

Have two 129ah 12v Li Pros for TM, and LA house battery.
129ah probably overkill, but it’s nice to not have to worry about them.
I’ve had a single 36V Abyss for 3 years. Great battery, never had an issue with it.
Whichever one you choose, I would opt for a single 24V battery.

Ionic has a pretty good price point too. US company with NC based customer service and distribution. I believe most if not all LiFePo4 cells are made in China.

Some of the companies are advertising lithium starters as well as deep cycles, but I am not sure how to decide what the engines are compatible with.

If the power meets your needs I think the choice comes down to price and warranty

I just received an amped outdoors battery for a project I have been working on

Battleborn looks like another good option
Didn't realize I could get a single 24V instead of two 12s.
So far every video I have seen on youtube about lithium batteries the channnel has been sponsored by the battery company.
Even the tear down videos where they take the batteries apart are sponsored by the battery manufacturer.

They are pretty simple inside just a bunch of battery cells wired together. Most of them are using the same battery cells under the cover. You could even make your own if you wanted.
I’m doing similar research for a 36V 60Ah battery to power my new PowerPole Move.

So far everybody I know seems to be happy with whatever they bought, or champions whatever they’re selling.

$1500 Dakota has 11 year warranty but the highest 48# weight. I know someone with a 24V that they honored their replacement warranty at less than one year.

$2000 Abyss has 38# weight and Clearwater location with Palm Harbor retailer plus 5 years replacement warranty and 5 more prorated.

$2800 Lithium Pros is 39# weight and 10 year warranty. But they’re in Knoxville, TN, and didn’t answer the phone when I called to clarify warranty terms.

$1600 Lithium Battery Power is 33#, has same warranty as Abyss, is also in Clear water, and I was told the Abyss guy used to work there.

I’m leaning towards the latter.

Didn’t look at 24V options

I've got the LBP 24V 75Ah battery running my Minn Kota Terrova and it has been great so far. I have spoken to the tech department @ LBP, they have answered the phone every time I called and have been very professional answering my questions. Their spec sheet says it 27lbs, a 10-year warranty and lists at $1,196.00 LBP Website

Be sure you have a handle on the charger you need for your specific battery. I am using Victron Blue Smart IP67 24V 12A charger. Victron Blue Smart

I also installed a Victron IP65 SmartShunt to monitor the status of the battery, it's like a gas gauge of sorts. Victron SmartShunt

I’ve run Amped for the past two skiffs, never an issue. Their 24 and 36 v’s are stupid light! 24V 50Ah Trolling Motor Lithium Battery (LiFePO4)

Thanks for the details on the batteries. Must hear more about this PowerPole Move!

I didn't realize I could get one 24V or one 36V battery. It would be complete overkill, but I'm now thinking of going with a 36V Minnkota and a single 36V tm battery with charger. Would I get longer life out of a 36V versus the 24V? My thinking is the 36V versus the 24V is that the 36 won't be working as hard to move the boat around...or keep it in place if I get a GPS tm. Still undecided and could very much stick with the 24V single battery and charger. Just thinking out loud.

Lastly, what battery setup would I need. I'm thinking a house/starting/cranking battery, the single lithium one for the tm, the on board alternator charger for the lithium tm battery, and a Blue Seas switch. That sound right? An alternator charger would charge the tm battery while I'm running around, correct?

Wait! Does a 2003 150 Yamaha VMax HPDI even have an alternator?

Yes

No no no no NO!

Yes
Mike, just for clarification, the house/cranking/starting would all be 1 battery and not 3 separate ones. So I'm thinking one battery for that and either the single 24V or 36V for the tm.

The engine electrical system is 12V, and will not charge a 24V battery through a relay.
You need a step-up transformer to do that.

I’ve got an old 12-24 Stealth charger laying around somewhere because the alternator on my smaller outboards didn‘t put out enough to make a TM battery life difference running 30 minutes or less 2-3 times a day. And it won’t work for lithium because it’s peak voltage is too low. Could be good for someone still running Lead.

Power Pole Charge would be good for you running a 150. Cost $1500 plus install labor & materials.

You've never stated what type of boat you plan to power with your trolling motor. If it's a skiff, I doubt you would ever require the expense and longevity of a 36V system. I have a 24V system and run the heck out of the TM and sometimes use it for two days before charging. Have not heard of any others complaining about their 24V system failing them after a hard days use. If you're really worried you will drain your battery, buy a larger capacity battery! You might benefit from speaking with a knowledgeable professional at a marine battery supplier.
I have an ionic 125ah for my starter/ house. Absolutely love it. Having the app to monitor the battery is great. I have a lbp 24v 75ah as well. It lasts forever, but wish it has the Bluetooth bms.

If you want to look into something cheaper than power pole charge check out yandina. They have lithium versions of many models now. That said I'm not running one because I don't need to fish for 3 straight days often.
Battleborn single 24v 50ah (really 60ah) is way more than enough in my east cape vantage. I also never pole so I’m on trolling motor hard all day in wind never been close to killing it. Great company never had any issues and I think the battery is only 899 now
Captain friend of mine. Not just some guy I follow on Insta. If that's what he uses, that's what I'll be using. The brand and not the voltage.
