So I'm having a lightweight skiff built & will be in need of an outboard. I am comparing between the 9.9 Yamaha or the 9.8 Tohatsu? Money not being the most important factor the Yamaha is around $2,400 & the Tohatsu @ $1,800, but $600 is a large enough difference to take a look. Doesn't really make a difference to me other than having it serviced if need be? I have been seeing more & more positive things on the Tohatsu, but service is my only concern. Looking for mainly people that have had experience with the Tohatsu brand as the Yamaha goes without saying IMO.
How close does a service center have to be to cover a $600 / 25% price gap? That's a question with a lot of different answers, depending on who you ask.
If you do your own oil changes and water pumps it is entirely possible that a new four stroke can go years, decades even, without ever seeing a service center.
And it would not surprise me if these two motors were made on the same assembly line.
Save your 600 dollars and get the tohatsu these small motors run for a long time as long as there are taken care of. That's the cost difference of a micro power pole just saying.
Have experience with the Tohatsu TLDI 50. It is, has been a great engine. Very fuel efficient. Never needed a service from Tohatsu or a trip to dealer in 5 years. Did it all.
All good points! I am aware of the Tohatsu 9.9EFI but it is heavier. The regular 9.9 Tohatsu is the lightest in it's class & from what I've researched it seems to be a proven reliable motor. Unless I can find a smokin deal on a Yamaha I think it will be the Tohatsu
Yamaha 9.9 is 87#
Tohatsu 9.8 is 81.5#
Tohatsu 9.9efi is 94.7#
Tohatsu 15efi is 94.7#
I am only comparing the Yamaha 9.9 & the Tohatsu 9.8 which is more than enough power for a 100# skiff
