Has anyone used the prisma fiberglass/foam shapes? I am considering using the TR-1530 for spray rails like the yellowfin skiff has on my spear glades x skiff. Thinking of sanding the finish down and epoxy the shapes to the sides vs the under the overhang style spray rails as it would not require any mechanical fasteners to attach to the hull sides...any thoughts or suggestions?
Never used them but I think they would be designed as the same dimension the entire length and would look like you bolted a 2x4 on. There is no way to change the shape of them.
Its a fishing skiff not a trailer queen like the HB and such. Not quite a commercial boat, I only fish 2/3 days a week. 2/3 trips on a 5 gal top off, stays in a boat hoist/shed.
Then why couldn't you wet out a piece of cloth and let it dry. Cut and shape and duplicate for the other side. Then tab into place and put a couple more layers on?
Why are you such a piss ant? Dude asked about spray rails, not whether or not you would mount them on your boat.
To the OP, post a photo of your hull underneath the cap and see what we can do with starboard unless you are just dead set on ruining your gelcoat with trying to epoxy them to your hull.
I bet Harry could mold you up something that would look nice and not be too bad to install. If I remember the picture of your boat the front bulkhead is open and would allow easy access. I'm envisioning something along the lines of what East Cape does on the Lostmen. Or similar to what folks used to do to lappy Hewes hulls back in the day, not sure why you don't see it anymore, I never thought they looked bad.
Not drilling holes thru the hull or deck to attach the spray rails with more places to leak and holes to crack from screws. Would prefer to attach with epoxy n gel coat them. Epoxied spray rails to hull would stiffen the sides as well. Thanks all for your thoughts and ideas. I thought someone on the site might have experiences with the Prisma Shapes. Spoke to Harry some time ago and it seemed he was too busy to build them and I would have to bolt/screw on as well.
X2 on the starboard. A few dozen bolt holes above the water line will be a lot easier to fill and fair at a later date than trying to grind off something that has been epoxied on. The starboard will look much better too.
Strongly recommend against using the Prisma shapes.
Seems like getting the shape you want out of that pre formed beam would be a lot of work.
What does the front of that thing look like? Can you form something on the back side of the rubrail? At least that way you can taper it off so it doesn't look too goofy.
I'm pretty sure the TR-1530 is meant to be used as a pre-formed stringer with those built in tabs...
Its 2&3/8" wide at the base but tapers to 1" and is 2&7/8" tall.
If you shape it, you will be sanding off the fiberglass and will leave exposed foam which you will just have to re-glass...
No bait. This is the internet. There are no simple answers. It's easy for us all to be experts since we can't be called out, held liable. We can repair, make or build anything with a keyboard.
You can make, repair or build anthing with sarcasm. Is that your skill set? Just about everything I comment on is from firsthand experience. The only thing I have not done on my boat with my own two hands is bend, cut and weld the poling platform but I drew the plans up for it. Everything else was me, not a boat shop or a buddy that was paid to do it. I think I would mechanically fasten spray rails under the lip behind the rubrail before I sanded off gelcoat and epoxied anything to the hull but that’s just me. Sorry for discussing in a general discussion.
I have no dog in this fight but personally i would rather they be epoxied on. Ive had to fix leaking bolted on spray rails before and personally i dont like any holes at or near the waterline.
That said, the prisma board is not what your looking for in this situation.
i would run some pvc board strips thru a table saw of your size liking, then run them thru a router table with a large roundover bit. You can then get a couple friends to help you shape the rails with a heatgun to the contour of the hull, and they can give an outside opinion on if it looks good or not!
Then tape the area off nicely, sand inside the taped areas, clean and epoxy it on.
its exactly what i did with my older skiff and im going to do it to my current boat when i get the time.
just take your time and do it right, having a couple people help is a must.
Please advise what pvc shape u used as I do have a few tools to use to modify a shape with
