Looking for a windbreaker style jacket that’s waterproof and not bright in color. I’d rather it not be insulated. I can layer if need be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve looked a little on the web and am just a little sketchy about buying something like this without putting my hands on it.
Check out the Northface Hyvent DT. Made with Gortex, super light, completely waterproof - had mine for 5 years plus and still beads. Can be rolled up tightly and stored in even the smallest dry box. Love mine.
This one, I have two and they work great in light rain, if you want something completely waterproof in a downpour FrogToggs are cheap and effective and for a little more you can get some nice jackets from Cabela’s or Simms.
Look at the Gill website. They have some great jackets that are tested by offshore sailors and now make some fishing jackets too. Not the cheapest but def. great quality.
Gore, or one of the newer breathable waterproof fabrics like the ones Toray produces. Believe Simms is starting to use their stuff in some items.. If it's not a breathable fabric then there's no point because you're gonna be swimming in your own sweat anyway
Gore tex is King!!! You will want to look at cut and finish. Some jackets are wading length, like the Simms guide, and if your not wearing waders it's too short. The acklins by Simms is the same triple layer gore Tex in a full length.
I bought it for backcountry skiing
The woods I ski in northern vt are referred to as glades and had many trees
I had been through a lot of jackets because of this
The arcteryx is 11 or 12 years old at this point and doesnt look it at all
With proper layering it was good for -30 and comfortable up to 75-80
I want to buy a little lighter one just for the boat but cant seem to justify subjecting it to saltwater
Another strong vote for the LL Bean stowaway. I've had mine for 6 years now and everything is still flawless. Has goretex so it can handle the hot south Florida summers. very good investment.
No doubt Simms is a great jacket and you will see a lot of guides and professional fishermen wearing that gear, but it is expensive. Unless you fish offshore and in the most foul weather, that jacket is massive overkill IMO. Plenty of $100-$200 jackets that are great and won't bust the bank. If you got the cash though, no doubt it will get the job done.
