Chernobyl Shrimp Recipe...

These instructions are for recreating an excellent Chernobyl Shrimp fly that was originally part of an assortment pack available from Bass Pro Shops. Although likely intended for saltwater species, it has turned out to be outstanding for freshwater bass.

Materials;

  • Hook – Mustad 34007 – Size 6
  • Thread – Tan and Chartreuse
  • Craft Fur – Tan
  • Pearl Chenille - Olive
  • Rooster Saddles - Olive
  • Small Lead Eyes
  • Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails Adhesive
  • Black Sharpie

Begin by starting your tan thread and tying in a clump of craft fur.

Brush the wrappings with a bit of adhesive and then tie in one end of the chenille. Advance your thread to about half way up the hook shank.

Palmer the chenille forward for three to four wrappings, then tie off and cut.

Next, tie in a hackle and palmer forward creating a thick collar.

Pull the collar back with your fingers and over wrap the base to force it to point backwards.

Whip finish the tan thread and cut. Brush the windings with adhesive, then start the chartreuse thread.

Next, tie in your lead eyes.

Add a weed guard if needed, then continue wrapping to build up the head. Finish by adding tail stripes and coating the head with adhesive.

Make a few more, then go catch something!

Success!
