Hey guys I'm going to be selling my BT vengeance and going more towards a bare-bones types skiff (possibly looking at a Shadowcast 18', or any other ones you would recommend). Wanting something bare-boney (lol) I was looking at tillers, but I've never owned one before and was wondering how much of a change it was from a center console, how easy it is to dock (since my wife could possibly be doing it), etc.. I will be fishing 90% creeks, inshore (NC inshore). Another thing to consider is I live about 3 hours away from the beach so I need to be able to learn it, just for ease (which is the reason Im selling the BT, not enough time). Anyway, let me know what you think!!
It isn't a hard transition. Your steering is actually more responsive since you have a direct connection to the motor. Your tiller hand can get a little crampy on long runs.
I had a merc 60hp fourstroke tiller. Great motor but it would wear you out. That and 40 mph in a 17' rigid inflatable with a tiller was a little excessive on my part at times.
It got away from me one time coming back from alligator light. It was low tide and where we were staying you either idle in trimmed up or run wot. I hit a wave and jerked the motor one way then tried to over correct at that point it was too late and I ripped the lanyard off but also smashed my eye off the battery. By far one of the dumber things ive done in my life.
People didnt know what to think when they saw that inflatable tarpon fishing on the flats with Vermont hull numbers
